September 2025 – Variable Interval Training for Detection Dogs (RT)

One of the biggest challenges in detection dog teams is maintaining two key qualities:search endurance and odor commitment. Too many dogs either fade out when the search gets long, or they tap odor and move on because reinforcement didn’t come quick enough. both issues can be addressed with a structured progression using Variable Interval (VI) reinforcement.

This 4-week plan is going to tackle two different but equally important training goals:
1. Indication Behavior at Odor – teaching the dog to hold odor for longer, starting at 2–5 seconds and working up to 20+ seconds.
2. Search Duration – building stamina so your dog can confidently search for 10–12 minutes without disengaging.
